How We Calculate Engagement Scores

A plain-language guide to the six dimensions behind every score

Engagement measures platform activity — and two parts of it feed your CrossCheck

Engagement measures how an advisor maintains their presence on AdvisorCheck. It is entirely within the advisor's control. It is not a quality, suitability, or regulatory judgement — the CrossCheck is the regulatory score, built from public filings. The two numbers are never added together and never combined into one. Two published Engagement-side measurements do feed the CrossCheck's Profile Boost (up to 5 points, explained on the CrossCheck methodology page): the data-quality index and profile-share reach, described below. Nothing else crosses over — not the composite Engagement number, not posting activity, not follows — and nothing reaches the firm score, the firm leaderboard, or search ordering.

Only the dimensions we can measure are scored

Engagement combines six dimensions. Currently (September 2026), 4 of them are measured:

Profile Completeness — Measured currently

How much of the profile is filled in and passes a validity check — photo, a bio of at least 200 characters that is not boilerplate or a duplicate, specialties, practice details, education, and at least one link. Edits older than 12 months count a little less until refreshed.

Verification — Measured currently

The checks an advisor has completed: claiming the profile, confirming the record at claim time, a verified email, a verified phone, and an issuer-confirmed CFP® certification.

Social Platforms Linked — Measured currently

Professional accounts linked and verified — LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Each verified platform counts equally; an unverified suggestion counts for nothing.

Website Integration — Measured currently

A supplied website that links back to the AdvisorCheck profile with a visible link. The crawl that checks this is not running yet, so this dimension currently contributes less than its full weight.

Social Activity — Not measured currently

Posting cadence and reach on linked platforms. Not measured currently: it needs a metrics connection we have not switched on.

Community Following — Not measured currently

Following the industry accounts we curate. Not measured currently: the curated account lists are not published yet.

A dimension we cannot measure for an advisor this cycle is shown as not scored, and that is not a zero — it is left out of the arithmetic entirely. The published number is the weighted average of the dimensions that were measurable, with the weights redistributed across them, rounded once at the end.

The data-quality index — reused by your CrossCheck

Alongside the composite, the same four measured dimensions produce a data-quality index: how complete, verified and linked your record is, on a fixed 0–100 scale that never redistributes. Your published data-quality index is the profile part of your CrossCheck's Profile Boost — about 4 of the boost's 5 points. It is reused, never re-derived: the same published value feeds both scores.

Profile shares — visits count, sharing alone does not

When you share your profile with the tracked link from your share dialog, we count the distinct visitors the link brings over a rolling 90-day window, and 20 distinct visitors earn the full share point of the CrossCheck Profile Boost. Sharing without visits earns nothing. Automated traffic and your own visits never count, and a visitor is stored only as a one-way hash — we do not store IP addresses or browser fingerprints for this. A sudden, unusual jump in visitors is held for review before it is published, and a held value never feeds your CrossCheck until the review completes.

Only our own data feeds it — and follows are never scored

An engagement score is built entirely from an advisor's own activity on the AdvisorCheck platform and the accounts they themselves link — never from purchased data, never from an outside data provider, and never from payment. We may invite you to follow AdvisorCheck on a platform you have linked; that is a suggestion, not a scored action — following us or anyone else earns no points here and no CrossCheck points, and we do not track whether you did.

Tier bands

85–100 — Highly Engaged

70–84 — Engaged

50–69 — Building

0–49 — Getting Started

"Unclaimed" is not a band and not a score of 0 — it is a claim state, read from the record: the advisor has not claimed their profile, so there is nothing to measure. A claimed advisor who scores 0 is "Getting Started", the lowest band.

Gaming controls

Scores exist to describe a record, so unusual jumps are checked before they are published:

  • A dimension jumping more than 40 points in one cycle is held for review. Your published score stays at the previous number until the review completes — normally within 7 days — and a held value never feeds your CrossCheck.
  • A platform whose follower count triples in a week while engagement stays flat is paused out of the score for 60 days.
